5L Day Three - Herculaneum
Today we said goodbye to our hotel and a joyous hello to Herculaneum - the sea side resort of the Ancient Romans. We had a great time exploring the ruins, which are better preserved then those at Pompeii. We played a game in the palestra, the training area for gladiators; we even went to the bathhouse (boys and girls separate.. of course!) to learn how the Ancient Romans relaxed.
We had a great time exploring the beautiful houses, taking in the wonder and awe of the gorgeous frescoes and mosaics and learning all about how the Ancient Romans lived.
After a tiring but exciting three days, it was time for the ride back home and a bit of our own relax time!

5L Day Two: Pompeii- A step Back in Time
Mr Litman reading us the final few pages of our novel.
Performing in the Odeon theatre
More performing!
Playing in one of the ancient houses!
The setting of our masterpiece of acting!
We marched around the Amphitheater like true Gladiators!
Mr Evans giving us strategy to assassinate the emperor!
"Hmmm who to assassinate........."
5L on Via Abbondanza - a true step back in time.
"May I take your order??"
Day two looked to be off to an ominous start, with dark storm clouds brewing over the bay of Naples and rain spattering our windscreen on our drive towards Pompeii, an ancient Roman town buried under 6 meters of ash and dust after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D.
5L arrived at Pompeii and immediately took on the roles as gladiators, marching into the Amphitheater and parading around before playing a fun game of "Assassinate the Emperor".
Afterwards we stepped back in time and took in such sights as the House of Fawn,The Bakery, some local taverns, the laundry and some thermopolium - where the people of Pompeii could order a hot meal and catch up. We had fun playing barman and serving drinks and food!
We also went to the local meeting point, the Forum - where Mr Litman read us the final pages of our story, under the watchful eye of Mt. Vesuvius. We also got to become actors and perform a short play in the Odeon theatre, just like ancient times, we even had a real audience!
All in all, another fun, exciting and tiring day! Mr Litman shared with us a whole range of knowledge about Pompeii and ancient lifestyles.
Tomorrow we start for home, but not before checking out another Ancient town, Herculaneum!

More pictures from 5L Day One
The hike to Mt. Vesuvius was awesome! After ten steps I was already tired and the trail was very slippery. When we got to the top I saw for the first time a crater of the most famous volcano. (Nicholas)
When we went to Vesuvius, clouds gathered around us and I became cold. We went straight to the crater and walked along it. The crater was huge! (Gywnne)
It felt sort of weird climbing a volcano because you never know when it will erupt. I enjoyed it very much. I took a stone of lava to show my family. (Rocco)
Climbing Mt. Vesuvius was hard and tiring. The hiking was kind of boring but the crater at the top was interesting. (Anna Livia)
It was really fun to climb t the top of Mt. Vesuvius but it was cold. You could see the beautiful Bay of Naples until the clouds came. It was really exciting and I had a lot of fun. (Saskia)
5L Day One - Vesuvius!
top of the world! (Well Vesuvius that is)

After an exciting bus ride from Rome, 5L finally made it to Mount Vesuvius. After having lunch, we trekked up the side of the dormant volcano with Saskia and team eagerly leading the charge. At the top we met our guide who gave us some great information about Vesuvius, then we bought some souvenirs and completed our activity book.
After a tiring day we retired to our hotel, had a lovely meal and went to bed, ready to face the wonder of Pompeii tomorrow!

5B Day 3- Herculaneum
On our last day, we checked out of the hotel then headed to Herculaneum. There we enjoyed comparing the ruins and getting an idea of what a wealthy Roman seaside town was like. We were really impressed by the rock that has been excavated and by the skeleton remains we saw. It was a lovely trip. Thank you to the chaperones, Mr. Antonio, Ms. Westelaken, and Ms. Paola!
Looking at the map of the city.

These are pictures from the latrines and the changing room of the baths.

We saw many lovely Roman houses, with all of the rooms and even some frescoes left. Here we are looking at an impluvium, where rain water was caught and used for the house.

5B Day 2...Pompeii
We had a great time today in the shadow of Vesuvius! With a little imagination, we were like the ancients themselves, playing in the amphitheatre, acting onstage in the theatre, living the life of the wealthy in a beautiful domus, and of course, shopping along the Via della Abbondanza.

Protect the emporer!!!!
Anyone for a hot meal?
We are looking forward to another exciting day tomorrow as we head to Herculaneum, then home!
At The End of The Day......
